Residency at Interactive Berlin

2023
Project brief
This was a 2-month long, intensive residency that allowed me to take a hands-on approach to working with electronic components, sensors, motors, and power supplies as well as with Bela for interactive audio, Raspberry pi, and Arduino microcontrollers to play and to create magical things that bring ideas to life through interactivity. The residency equipped me with the technical expertise and confidence to continue working on my own interaction design projects long after the program has ended. The residency’s goal was to use physical computing, interactivity, materials and fabrication, to create a series of interactive public artworks by programs end and activate public spaces. Beyond the Surface: An Artistic Quest, is the culmination of a learning experience at the School of Machines, Making & Make Believe this summer. Throughout this experience I learned to work with different boards (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Bela.io), as well as many sensors (capacitive touch sensors, ultrasonic distance sensors, light dependant resistors) and actuators (LEDs, RGB LEDs, servo motors). All of which culminated in this work shown outdoors in public space in Berlin during 'Inside Outside: Interactive Artwork in Public Space', in July 2023.

Beyond the surface: an artistic quest

"Beyond the Surface" is an innovative project that transcends the confines of traditional galleries. Through scavenger hunts and interactive tours, I sought to dissolve the veil that conceals artists and their creations, making each artist visible and celebrated, thus enriching the narrative of art as a whole. As a first prototype, I invisioned miniature interactive galleries and art “treasure” cache’s hidden throughout the space, taking audiences through a narrative I’d written himself. Beyond the Surface is a prototype that may very well become a core part of In Plain Sight’s modus operandi, and I’m looking forward to explore how he can activate public spaces around the city of London. Users interact with the piece by clicking the button on the green box and they would get a poem from the thermal printer that dictates the What3Words location(in the form of a poem) of my other hidden pieces around the space. Each piece is interactive, and showcases its interactions when viewers step close to it.
